Just saying: Loyalty

Another stimulating extract from the book Everyday Psychology, by Dr Steve Edwards.

“We are all in the same boat in a stormy sea, And we owe each other a terrible loyalty.” — Gilbert Keith (G.K.) Chesterton.

Dr Edwards comments: Loyalty is a precious aspect of human relations. It is best found in long-term interpersonal relationships that have stood the test of time, where the proverbial bag of salt has been eaten. Trust and loyalty, however, has to be won, not assumed or expected. Also,  loyalty surfaces in extreme conditions such as concentration camps, prisons,  mental hospitals and associations, where “being in the same boat” has a wonderful effect of generating brotherhood and sisterhood amongst people.

Every person has the right to self-respect — we all have worth. If we treat others as a means to an end, we are violating their loyalty.
