Just saying: Loneliness

Another useful extract from the bo0k Everyday Psychology, by Dr Steve Edwards.

‘Loneliness and the feeling of being uncared for and unwanted are the greatest poverty.’  — Mother Theresa.

Dr Edwards comments: J.H. van den Berg, the phenomenological psychologist, famous for his doctrine of metabletics, which  refers to the changing reality of man through history, has defined psychopathology as a  ‘science of loneliness’. Loneliness and alienation form the base for many human problems. One can feel lonely in crowds.

As the lack of meaningful human contact, loneliness can be contrasted with aloneness. Aloneness is a fact, loneliness is a feeling. One way to overcome loneliness is to take Ralph Waldo Emerson’s advice: ‘The only way to have a friend is to be one.’

Dilys comments: The festive season is upon us, and many people feel lonely and alone. Take time to make someone feel needed.
