In early June, Maeder Oster, Toverview founder and editor-in-chief, travelled up to Hanglip Farm via the Klein Karoo, and stopped at the only petrol station in the intriguing village of Willowmore to replenish his trusty Hoenderhaan (Mahindra Thar).
Acting on impulse, and with Toverview’s needs and interests constantly in his mind, he asked the attendant: ‘Are there any writers in town?’ It turned out there was. A few celphone calls later, he was directed to the hospitable Windmill café-restaurant on the main street, ‘where the yellow umbrella stands’.
There, he was soon in conversation with Destine Nde, a young writer from the West African country of Cameroon, now living in Willowmore with his wife and two children. This was the start of a warm and growing relationship.
Destine is the gifted author of a number of books and short stories, and has become a Toverview contributor. In the video clip below, Destine visits a lively barber shop called Willowmore’s Finest Cut, which makes one see community life in this small town in a new light.
