Oom Schalk Lourens hits the Hantam

By Maeder Osler

A Waenhuis welcome to storyteller David Muller ! There are people who say that homo sapiens (sentient humans) should rather be known as homo narrans – that is, story-telling humans. If this is so, a distinguished example is visiting us soon in the form of the one-person storyteller and entertainer David Muller.

Among others, he specialises in one-person shows as Oom Schalk Lourens, the famous rural raconteur created by Herman Charles Bosman.

He is visiting us in early November, and will perform on Hanglip Farm as well as at the Hantam Community Education Trust.

The performances will be as follows:

BLOOD & SILVER: Hanglip Farm, Wednesday 5 November, 4 pm.

BUSHVELD BOO!: School hall, Hantan Community Education Trust, Grootfontein Farm, Thursday 6 November, 12 noon.

ALL WELCOME! And we’ll keep you posted …

About Blood and Silver

Blood and Silver is adapted from Jan Glazewski’s memoir of the same title. Directed and designed by Fred Abrahamse, and performed by David Muller, this compelling one-man play traces Glazewski’s remarkable life (he grew up in Durbanville and now lives in McGregor) through themes of blood and silver – his struggle with haemophilia and HIV, and his family’s buried heirlooms in war-torn Poland. Seamlessly blending humour and poignancy, Blood and Silver explores exile, resilience, and the search for belonging. Abrahamse’s imaginative staging and Muller’s captivating performance illuminate a story of courage, healing, and gratitude. The real treasure lies in rediscovered family and hope.
