Informal settlement, Goodwood, Cape Town, winter 2025. At last count, there were well over 600 informal settlements in Greater Cape Town, and many more if smaller likes like these are included. What sets this one apart is that it’s next to the entrance to Acacia Park Parliamentary Village, one of three villages housing up-country MPs during parliamentary sessions. So it’s business in your face, so to speak — a daily reminder of the fruits of their labours (and 30 years of post-liberation governance) when they whizz off to parliament in the mornings. Well, at least in time for lunch.
