Launch of Colesberg Heritage Dialogue

After extensive preparatory work, the Colesberg Heritage Dialogue (NPC) will be formally launched on Saturday 14 December.

The launch will take place at Dinamo Etes at the Colesberg One Stop, and will last from 9 am to 2 pm. Adv. Antony Osler will deliver a keynote address. Board members will be introduced, followed by discussions of key thematic areas.

According to the project’s originator, Jefferey Rademeyer, the event is open to all. To download an invitation, click here.

Jefferey has also released a lengthy and detailed project concept document that will serve as a basis for the discussions. To download the document, click here.

The scope of the project has broadened considerably. Initially, it was conceived as a community project aimed at generating a more inclusive history of Colesberg that would correct the skewed perspectives embedded in dominant accounts of Colesberg’s past.

Now, however, the organisers are seeking to expand the initiative into a broader project in which Colesberg’s history and heritage will be used to drive a multifaceted development programme.
In line with this, the concept document starts by providing a digest of Colesberg’s history. Next, it provides a socio-economic profile of the town, and then outlines an elaborate strategic framework for a multisectoral development programme.

Confirming the shift in the project’s focus, Jefferey has commented as follows: ‘The project is now aimed at using Colesberg’s history and heritage to unlock its socio-economic development and to create independent institutions, cooperatives and businesses that will enable its economy to flourish, and the community to take charge of its own destiny.

‘The document is still in draft form, and there are still gaps in the analysis. However, it is rich enough to spark meaningful discussions. It also provides ample potgential roles for everyone with an interest in the welfare of the town and all its residents. The underlying idea is that everybody linked to Colesberg has a responsibility for helping to create a more prosperous town. Everyone is welcome.’
